چکیده

During continuous casting, electromagnetic braking (EMBr) is a widely used technology to improve the quality of steel product. The EMBr takes benefit generation Lorentz forces that are induced by interactions melt flow with externally applied magnetic fields. In present paper we propose and investigate new type EMBr, named vertical-combined (VC-EMBr) in application Compact Strip Production (CSP) thin slab casting mold. unique characteristic VC-EMBr lies fact two pairs vertical poles (VMPs) located adjacent mold narrow faces on basis Ruler-EMBr. To determine effect VC-EMBr, influence installation position VMPs flow, heat transfer solidification behaviors ultra-low carbon 1500 × 70 mm CSP funnel-type numerically solved. fluid-flow-related phenomena three cases mold, i.e., No-EMBr, Ruler-EMBr, further investigated evaluate metallurgical capability including quantitative evaluation level fluctuation, transfer, shell growth at speed 4.5 m/min. parametric study shows for width mm, optimal can be obtained when 50 from face With this adjustment, magnitude maximum surface velocity reduced pct compared case p1 = 0 mm. This reduction decrease loss upper recirculation region promote homogeneity temperature field therein. addition, results show newly proposed provides more obvious technological advantages than traditional Ruler-EMBr bifurcated nozzle. For horizontal (HMPs) keep same advantage as providing good protection against excessive downward impact molten steel. On other hand, overcome disadvantage cannot well suppress upward backflow instance, applying flux density 0.3 T, has better reduce amplitude fluctuation 83.8 increase average 1803.6 K 1804.5 variation prevent defects related such slag entrapment powder freezing. basis, it seen industrial these findings.

Thermal Simulation of Solidification Process in Continuous Casting

In this study, a mathematical model is introduced to simulate the coupled heat transfer equation and Stefan condition occurring in moving boundary problems such as the solidification process in the continuous casting machines. In the continuous casting process, there exists a two-phase Stefan problem with moving boundary. The control-volume finite difference approach together with the boundary ...

Using Finite Point Method for the Numerical Simulation of Heat Transfer Coupled with Microsegregation during Continuous Casting

In the present work, a meshless method called Finite Point Method (FPM) is developed to simulate the solidification process of a continuously cast steel bloom in both primary and secondary cooling regions. The method is based on the use of a weighted least-square interpolation procedure. A transverse slice of the bloom moving at casting speed is considered as the computational domain and two di...

Flow Control with Ruler Electromagnetic Braking (EMBr) in Continuous Casting of Steel Slabs

Electromagnetic forces are an important tool to control fluid flow in the mold, combined with other casting conditions, nozzle, and mold geometry. Methods include static magnetic fields (local and ruler EMBr), and time-varying magnetic fields, such as electromagnetic stirring, (EMS), multi-mode EMS, electromagnetic level stabilizers (EMLS), and electromagnetic level accelerators (EMLA). Optimal...

Melt Flow Characterization in Continuous Casting Tundishes

Melt flow in continuous casting tundishes is normal[y characterized by a combined model. The model is used to analyze the residence time disttibution of fluid in a tundish, In this model, the fluid volume in tundish is considered to be consisting of the plug flow, well-mixed flow, and dead volumes. Although this model was proposed over 20 years ago, most researchers have either used it incorrec...

Three-dimensional Numerical Simulation of Metal Flow and Solidification in the Multi-cavity Casting Moulds of Automotive Components

The liquid metal flow and the solidification behaviours in a multi-cavity casting mould of two automotive cast parts were simulated in three dimensions. The commercial code, FLOW-3D® was used because it can track the front of the molten metal by a Volume of Fluid (VOF) method and allows complicated parts to be modeled by the Fractional Area/Volume Obstacle Representation (FAVOR) meth...
